About the Centre for Sports Business

The Centre for Sports Business is a global centre of excellence for sports business offering research, teaching, consultancy and executive education. We cover a wide range of subject disciplines from sports economics to sports marketing, branding and governance and work with many different stakeholders addressing real world challenges throughout the business of sport.

The School’s expertise and global reputation in the business of sport dates back to 1994 and the establishment of the Football Industries Group (FIG) which undertook research, consultancy and executive education for the football industry.  In 1997 the group’s activities expanded to teaching the business of football through the Football Industries MBA (FIMBA). Since its inception, the networks of relationships, global alumni, senior level practitioners in football and sport have helped us to develop excellence in this sector.

In 2015 we launched the Thoroughbred Horseracing MBA (THIMBA) which is the only masters-level qualification in the world for their industry.  It is delivered thanks to our exclusive partnership with Britain’s Horserace Betting Levy Board and the British Horseracing Authority. The programme combines our expertise in the business of sport, with the specialist equine knowledge of the University’s School of Veterinary Science.

More recently we began teaching our MSc in Sports Business and Management, offering a Masters level understanding of the global business of sport, its organisations, stakeholders and the disciplines which make it operate successfully.

Many of our alumni have now reached positions of seniority in the global sports business sector, including across all continents and in leading clubs and governing bodies across a broad spectrum of sports.

The Centre continues to undertake research into all aspects of sports business including shaping the Department of Culture, Media & Sport policy to reduce the maximum permitted stake on Fixed-Odds Betting Terminals from £100 to £2, and helping to define where the risk of match-fixing is most likely to occur, research which has been cited in sports arbitration cases going before the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

We have also developed excellence in sports business executive education with a range of bespoke programmes for clients including the League Managers Association, Godolphin and The Josoor Institute. Members of the Centre have strong relationships with practice, holding positions within a number of sporting organisations including with the Premier League, UEFA, The League Managers Association, The Football League, Women in Football, The Gambling Commission, the National Lottery Commission, and The Gambling Strategy Board.
