Overview

The Economics and Finance PhD places much emphasis on the area of mathematics and has been designed particularly for those students who wish to study within the fields of Economics, Financial Economics, or Finance potentially pursuing a career in academia. The programme is also an excellent opportunity for students who may wish to pursue a more professional mode of career development, for instance working within international organisations or research institutes.

Subject Overview

The programme provides students with the option of two pathways: the ‘Finance Pathway’ and the ‘Economics Pathway’. Under each pathway, modules have been introduced to provide students with advanced training in economics or finance.

Within the programme there are two pathways; the ‘Financial Economics Pathway’ and the ‘Economics Pathway’ and under each pathway, optional modules are provided which offerstudents with advanced training specific to that pathway. Whilst studying a PhD programme, students will be working closely with both their supervisory team and the ULMS academic community. This will ensure that their final submission is a comprehensive thesis within a specified research area and consequently will be able to defend their thesis during their viva voce.

The programme includes the completion of compulsory skills modules which provides students with the opportunity to identify and develop the knowledge, skills, behaviours and personal qualities that all postgraduate researchers should acquire over the course their PhD. Researchers will be given the opportunity to introduce their research to those outside of their discipline and to discuss this with academics, fellow research students and visitors.
