The results of the latest Research Excellence Framework (REF 2021) provide fantastic news for the University of Liverpool Management School and confirm the School’s upward trajectory since REF 2014.

With a GPA of 3.38, the School is positioned 17th in the top 20 ranked Business and Management Schools across the country, a jump of 14 places since REF 2014.

The Research Excellence Framework is a system for assessing the quality, impact and vitality of research in UK universities, assessed by considering the quality of research outputs, the impact on society and the research environment. 91% of the overall submission by the School was judged to be of 4* (world leading) or 3* (internationally excellent) standard. On this measure the School ranked 12th overall out of 108 units submitted in the Business and Management category.

For research power, which considers strength in numbers of research staff as well as research performance, the School is now ranked 9th in the UK.

Here at the Management School, a commitment to outstanding research lies at the heart of our vision. Our research is geared towards developing innovative work that delivers disciplinary and practice-oriented impact. These fantastic REF results reflect that the School shows great strength in impact and significant enhancement of our outstanding research.

The Dean of the Management School, Professor Julia Balogun, said: “I am delighted with this positive and exciting news about our performance in REF 2021.  In terms of our performance in what is a very large Unit of Assessment, with 108 submissions, we have more than achieved our aspiration to be in the Top 20. Thanks are due to everyone for this, for all the hard work that has gone in to making REF 2021 a School wide success.”
