Management consultancy and the impact of COVID-19: An alumni guest lecture

Undergraduate students from the Global Strategic Management module attended an online lecture with two University of Liverpool alumni who are now working at Big Four firms.

Marius Bräunig (MBA 2019), Senior Consultant in Technology Transformation at EY (pictured left) and Chloe Carter (MEng Mechanical Engineering 2017), Senior Associate in Technology Consulting at PwC (pictured right), delivered the session and spoke about how the pandemic has affected the sectors they work with as consultants.

The insight they provided will assist students when completing their assessment for the module - a 3000-word management consultancy-style pitch targeting a multinational company currently experiencing the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Marius and Chloe also shared their career stories and gave valuable advice around networking, developing strategic thinking, establishing their strengths and special interests, seeking to experience organisations of different sizes and using and testing digital products - for those interested in working in a tech environment.  It was inspiring for students to hear about the international travel both alumni speakers have been able to experience (pre COVID-19) as part of their roles.

Students had the opportunity to ask questions following the alumni talks.

Dr. Nora Balogh, Lecturer in Strategic Management and the Module Leader said: “I find it very important to bring practice into the module. Having two practitioners as guest lecturers brings a really relevant and unique perspective to the topics we are discussing and gives students behind-the-scenes insights on what work in the consulting world entails. Especially as both speakers are University of Liverpool alumni, I believe that their insights really speak to our soon-to-be graduates.”

Lukáš Tabák, BA International Business student, said: “Having the opportunity to ask questions and gain valuable insights from consultants is something that I always enjoy!”

During this unusual and challenging semester, the University’s alumni community has been an invaluable asset.  Graduates have helped to enhance the student experience in many ways and the Management School would like to extend a special thank you to them for their time and generosity.
