MBA students take part in welcome week induction programme

The Management School organised an induction programme for its new MBA cohort as part of this year’s welcome week.

The programme comprised various talks including a guest speaker session with Michael O’Brien, FIMBA alumnus and Football Administrator, as well as a panel discussion on leadership featuring Elizabeth Maitland, Associate Dean MBA, Rick Parry, Former CEO Liverpool Football Club, and Emma Stoddart, Partner at Grant Thornton.

A highlight of the week was the live case studies the students engaged in with Liverpool city icons; St George’s Hall and FRC Group (thanks to alumnus Stephen Powell and Shaun Doran, CEO at FRC).  At each organisation, students were presented with a wealth of information and given a consultancy challenge to solve and present as the first stage of their learning journeys.  This innovative new component of the MBA enables students to track their learning throughout the year, responding to live case studies, thought challenges and peer feedback.  As they toured through glorious concert rooms and halls, learnt about the challenges of responding to poverty and explored a labyrinth of underground spaces that have hosted air raid shelters and film sets for Peaky Blinders, students were inspired and provoked by the challenges of leading organisations in times of rapid change.

At the end of their induction week, students also took part in a GPS challenge across Liverpool City Centre.  This was an opportunity for them to have fun with their peers whilst learning more about the city and its ecosystem which will be their home for the next 12 months.

Reflecting on the week, Professor Elizabeth Maitland observed, “Weeks like these encapsulate the joy that learning and teaching bring – seeing friendships formed, new ideas seized and embraced, and wisdom shared.  A great group of students at the start of a year of sometimes challenging but, we hope, transformative experiences.”
