Accounting and Finance students attend ICAEW film premiere

Students from the BA Accounting and Finance programme recently attended a private screening of a newly released ICAEW film on current audit practice.

The screening of ‘Without Question’ took place on Monday 23rd April at the FACT cinema in Liverpool City Centre and was attended by 200 final year students as part of the Advanced Auditing module.

The film is ICAEW’s second drama production and includes real actors. It provides an impactful and interesting way to highlight the challenges of directors and professional advisors seeking assurance on difficult issues.  It has been screened in professional accounting circles to widespread acclaim and has been the equivalent of an accounting Hollywood box office hit!

Students were introduced to the film and after the first half, had the opportunity to discuss some of the issues that had been brought up before continuing to the thrilling conclusion.  Some of the themes that appeared included:

  • Conflicts with a family owned company
  • Difficulties in transitioning to become a listed entity
  • The struggle of founding shareholders with the loss of control
  • The struggle of new independent directors in asserting control and good governance

Natalie Curran, Accounting and Finance student, said “The ICAEW film screening was a fantastic opportunity to engage with the module content in a different way, allowing us to gain a new perspective and apply the theory we have learnt in lectures to a more in depth (if slightly dramatic!) business example.

We were also given the chance to get involved ourselves by discussing between us the risks highlighted, the impact and the consequences, all useful for looking at problems with an audit mentality. In all it was a very enjoyable morning, complete with a much appreciated boost of help for the exam as well as some super tasty popcorn."
