The University of Liverpool of Liverpool Management School welcomed back year in industry students with a two-day placement conference.

The conference saw students from across all Management School undergraduate programmes return to campus to deliver a presentation on their experiences and reflect on their personal and academic development over the last year. The presentations form part of the assessment for the Year in Industry.

Employers were invited to attend the presentations and represented both global and local companies from a range of industry sectors.

Allison Mawhinney, ETS Process and Technology Manager for Logistics at Unilever commented: “I believe Year in Industry is a unique opportunity for students to gain marketable skills in communication, organisation, and networking as well as practical skills learnt within the role. Taking on a placement student not only brings in fresh thinking to a company but also up to date knowledge which keeps a company developing. It is also very rewarding to see how far students develop over the year”.

Students have secured placements are leading companies including KPMG, Deloitte, IBM, Oracle, Shop Direct and Professional Liverpool.

BA Accounting and Finance student, Charlotte Sears undertook her placement at KPMG. She said: “My year in industry has given me so much more confidence to talk to people, whether this is interacting with a team or working with multiple stakeholders at different levels of seniority. Before I started my placement, my programme had given me a general understanding of business law and finance which I brought with me into the work place.

“My advice to anyone thinking about doing a year in industry is to take advantage of every experience and opportunity that is presented to you, both in the workplace and socially. I played an important part in the company and the year was more rewarding than I could have expected”.
