Craig Marshall, Managing Director at Siemens Magnet Technology, gave a talk to the MBA students as part of the MBA Guest Speaker series.

Since graduating from the University of Liverpool in 1984, Craig has become successful in a number of roles. He was appointed as Managing Director at Siemens Magnet Technology in 2010 where his facility won “factory of the year” in 2015.

In his talk “What is the difference between management and leadership? Plus how should you manage a friend?” Craig discussed three main focus areas of management; Management vs leadership, values to strategy and finally managing a friend.

When challenging the difference between management and leadership, Craig discussed how management is more about coping with complexity, maintaining predictable and reliable outcomes despite the complexities of the operating environment. Leadership is about having the vision that anticipates the need for change, implemented by a strategy which realises this vision.

Craig commented that “leadership comes mainly from the heart; it’s emotional. The second part is cognitive whereas management is the other way around.”

Craig also spoke about the difficulties that arise when managing a friend is the workplace. He used examples to highlight personal and operational challenges and discussed the behaviors that can impact work place conduct.
