Businesses from across the UK get involved in new start-up competition

Businesses from across the UK have been quick to get involved in the first Liverpool Start-Up Competition. The competition encourages undergraduate student entrepreneurs with either a commercial or social enterprise idea to submit a business pitch to a panel of judges.

Lawrence Kenwright, CEO of Signature Living Group, said "I am absolutely delighted to support future entrepreneurs from the University of Liverpool. The city has been good to me, and as a proud Scouser I am keen to give back. I want to ensure young entrepreneurs and business owners stay here in Liverpool and get the best possible start, and the competition will contribute to this aim."

Running from October 2018, the competition is open to all University of Liverpool undergraduates, who can enter as individuals or as a group, and has three stages.

Stage one involves submitting a powerpoint pitch deck, a short pitch video and financial plan documents. Stage two requires the entrants to develop a marketing campaign so people vote for their pitch video. The final stage has the highest voted six teams pitch their business idea to an invited panel of judges in front to a live audience.

Angelika Burawska, Chief Operating Officer at Startup Funding Club, 'entrepreneurship can be a rewarding and satisfying career path - but it's not the easiest one. It's full of challenges, and seeking support on the way to success is almost a part of the game. Startup Funding Club is committed to back the most drive, young entrepreneurs who have ambition and courage to build products and services that people need.'

Although winning the competition is the greatest achievement, the real prize is gaining business support and potential customer interest. The prizes, which have all been donated by companies, are:

£5,000 cash for winners of both categories from Santander
Opportunity to discuss the business plan with Lawrence Kenwright, CEO of the Signature Living group
A day’s worth of PR strategy with Pink Media
Six months co-working desk membership at Signature Works
Potential investment from The Startup Funding Club
A business startup package from BWM Chartered Accountants

"The team at BWM Chartered Accountants is looking forward to working with the Management School and supporting the competition winners, particularly with their financial planning and becoming investment ready. The competition is an excellent platform to get businesses off to the best possible start, helped by lots of professional support from the sponsors." Vicki Harper, Client Services Director at BWM Chartered Accountants.

Danielle Baldwin, Account Manager at Pink Media added, "We are delighted to support the entrepreneurs of the future by offering our services as part of the Liverpool Start Up Competition. We are incredibly excited to hear about the student's business ventures and look forward to working with the winners on a PR strategy to really get their vision off the ground."
