Sarah-Louise Taylor: BA Marketing 2012

I studied BA Marketing and I am now an Account Manager for McCann Manchester working on the Aldi account.

What does your role involve and what is a typical work day like?

No day is ever the same! It's very fast-paced so there is rarely any down-time. However, it’s also very exciting working on a supermarket account because everything is constantly changing and we have to be very aware of what our competitors are doing. Due to the fact that Aldi are so successful there is a lot of pressure on us as their marketing agency; we are always being pushed to our limits. This means a lot of cross communication to other departments within the agency and sharing ideas. McCann is a great company to work for because although it is so large there is a real sense of team spirit throughout the hierarchical chain.

How did your course prepare you for your role?

I always worked part-time alongside studying for my degree and this was invaluable in teaching me how to manage my time effectively. Having that extra responsibility also prepared me more for it when I did start working after my degree. Of course, the course content itself I rely on every day and it has proven even more useful as I have progressed in my career. Whilst at University I found I always struggled with modules that required me to give presentations to my class-mates; I would get nervous and embarrassed. Pushing myself to get better, with the support of my lecturers has really prepared me for where I am today as this is now a weekly requirement in my current position.

How did you use the university careers service?

When I found out I had been selected for an interview at McCann I was straight on the phone to the university careers service! I visited the careers team and received some tips and advice on how to prepare for the interview and I will find this useful in years to come. I also received a lot of help and support from Professor Anthony Patterson throughout my degree and also after I graduated from the Management School. I can’t thank him enough for this and without Anthony I don’t think I would be where I am today.

What did you enjoy most about your student experience?

I enjoyed the challenge of University- getting my head down and studying hard and socialising in my free time. My University years were definitely the best years of my life so far and I have made friends that I will have for life, and memories that I will treasure forever. I will always be proud to have been part of the University of Liverpool and the Management School especially with the reputation that it holds. I wish anyone luck who is considering going, Liverpool really is the best city in the world and the Management school really do support you every step of the way through your degree.

What are your career goals for the future?

In the immediate future I would like to progress further in McCann Manchester as the experiences and knowledge which I am gaining here are invaluable. I think that in the next few years I may look to work on other accounts which McCann hold in order to increase my experience across the board. This is definitely the career path which I want to follow!
