Design Year in London
An unrivalled opportunity to complete your undergraduate degree at the University of Liverpool, in one of the world's leading design destinations.
From 2018 we are offering a pathway to complete your third year of undergraduate study in Architecture, Industrial Design or Urban Regeneration and Planning at our London campus.
The University of Liverpool in London is a pioneer in the shifting role of design in the physical, economic and social environment. We work collaboratively with academic and industrial partners in ways that cut across individual disciplines. This transdisciplinary approach combines with high levels of creativity and technology to create new and transformative responses to “real world” challenges.
Your learning outcomes and qualification will be unaffected by the change of location, but there will be a specific design orientation, and the option to choose from a wider set of modules which are shared across the three undergraduate programme areas. In addition you will have access to a virtual reality module and the opportunity of hands-on experience with virtual design and engineering technologies.
We will encourage a collaborative learning experience, which stimulates creativity, innovation and problem solving, while opening up new experiences and networks to boost your future prospects.
Our London campus is situated on Finsbury Square in central London. We are in close proximity to the design industries of Clerkenwell and Farringdon, and the tech innovation district of Old Street. We are well connected to the local design and creative industries as well as policy making and urban initiatives such as the Culture Mile.
The campus is exceptionally located for the city’s most important architectural and heritage features, landmarks and recreational attractions of London, one of the world’s most iconic capital city destinations.
It is a vibrant time to study or work in design in London due to the unique mix of cutting-edge innovation and unrivalled design heritage. The Culture Mile Network, of which the University is part of, offers global cultural destinations on our doorstep including the Barbican and Museum of London.
The London campus has been designed to high specifications, with outstanding facilities available to you. The campus is an outstanding study environment characterised by bright, modern spaces and state of the art facilities; including a design studio and virtual reality suite.
You will be able to utilise the state of the art facilities on campus including our Virtual Engineering Centre (VEC) with a Virtalis ActiveWall featuring a Christie Digital Boxer 4K projector and an ART 6DoF tracking system. The adjacent suite for VR desktop working contains both a zSpace and an HTC Vive-based ActiveSpace.
Our library is the hub of student community on campus. We have a range of collaborative spaces, workstations, individual and group study rooms. As well as your core study texts, you will have access to all the digital resources you’re used to in Liverpool and high levels of support from our librarian and their team. If the book you want is not in our local collection, you can order it from the University of Liverpool library. You can even borrow from our partner London university libraries and enjoy discovering London’s world leading libraries and museums.
Develop skills, expertise and experience
Our London design studio takes a modern transdisciplinary approach, with effective collaboration across a range of academic disciplines in order to effectively tackle the design challenges of the 21st century.
Demand for expertise and skills within advanced modelling, simulation and immersive visualisation is strong within the region as many design and architecture practices have their headquarters and design teams based in and around London. Many businesses are finding it difficult to recruit staff that have experience of these emerging technologies. Capabilities such as creative problem solving and collaborative working are highly desirable. Our collaborative approach in London and the learning experience offered by our on-campus Virtual Engineering Centre, gives you a powerful edge to your future employability.
The year is an opportunity for you to connect with industry and build meaningful contacts with London-based design firms. This will include opportunities to link with our vibrant London based alumni community as well as exposure to niche and larger global businesses across a range of design interests.
For example - our 2017 Design Summer School, which brought undergraduate students together with academics and industry partners to seek creative Low Carbon transport solutions, was supported by General Electric, Beeline, LowCVP, LT Museum, CCAW and Catapults.
We can help you find suitable accommodation in safe and pleasant locations within easy reach of the campus. If there are problems, our friendly student experience team is here to help.
We have arrangements with UNITE Students at their Stratford One and Bethnal Green sites, as well as Urbanest at their Hoxton and Tower Bridge properties. We also have a partnership with University of London Housing Services (ULHS), a service that has a database of rental properties from landlords who have agreed to their code of practice (although please note that ULHS do not inspect the properties). ULHS offers a free contract checking service to students plus further legal advice relating to housing should they require this.

London life is not as expensive as you might think!
London attracts huge numbers of students from all over the world. The difference in cost depends on your lifestyle but with careful planning you can have a truly enriching experience in London without spending too much.
There are thousands of free events, seminars, museums, galleries and recreational opportunities. You can expect to benefit from student discounts on everything from travel, to cinema tickets and eating out.
The biggest cost is accommodation. The Complete University Guide 2017, estimates that the difference in cost is about £1,200 per year (£100 per calendar month). This difference is recognised through the London Weighting of £2,572 which will be added to your student loan. We also offer a £2,000 London enhancement on the Liverpool Bursary for eligible students.
