Claire Mahaffey

Dr Claire Mahaffey

I am a marine biogeochemist and work as a Senior Lecture in Ocean Sciences. My primary research focus is nutrient biogeochemistry, with emphasis on sources of nitrogen and phosphorus to phytoplankton in the open ocean, and the inextricable relationship between nutrients and cycling of carbon in the marine environment. I am also interested in understanding the distribution of dissolved organic carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus in the coastal and open ocean.

As a female ocean scientist in Liverpool, I hope I can encourage, support and inspire female undergraduate and postgraduate students to recognise and fulfil their academic potential and pursue a career in the sciences.
