UoL has experts in the infrastructure that supports Big Data:
Prof Paul Watry (PWa) co-founded the National Text Mining Centre, led the Cheshire digital library project, and developed the integrated Rule Oriented Data System (iRODS). iRODS and Cheshire are used in 32 countries by academia, industry, and government (eg the British Library).
Dr David Hutchcroft (DH) exemplifies UoL’s strong (h-index=55) links to CERN’s globally distributed data analytic infrastructure. UoL developed file access technology (a forerunner to XRootd, itself reminiscent of Hadoop). A current STFC-funded project is investigating how CERN’s infrastructure can support other Big Data projects.
Dr Jeyarajan Thiyagalingam is an expert in energy efficient computing, high performance computing and Big Data. Jeyan has relatively recently joined UoL from Mathworks and worked at the University of Oxford prior to that.
Cliff Addison is the lead on Advanced Research Computing within the University’s Computer Services Department and has extensive experience of working alongside researchers in specific disciplines to facilitate ambitious data-intensive and computationally heavy research.
