Iggy McGovern: ‘William Rowan Hamilton’s Mystic Dream of 4’
(Literature & Science Hub/ School of Physical Sciences joint event)
Tuesday 21st March, 17.30
The School of the Arts Library, 19-23 Abercromby Square.
William Rowan Hamilton was the premier mathematician of the first half of the 19th century; he was also a poet, and a friend of Wordsworth and Coleridge. Poet and physicist Iggy McGovern (Fellow Emeritus in Physics, Trinity College Dublin) has written a poetic biography of Hamilton comprising 64 sonnets, largely in the voices of Hamilton’s contemporaries. In this presentation by Professor McGovern the highs and lows of a remarkable life are explored, leavened by guest readings of 12 of the sonnets.
