Alicia Showering, a second year Biological Sciences student, has just completed a 7-week placement with the Microbiology Research Group in the Institute of Integrative Biology on a project funded by the Society for Applied Microbiology.

Alicia worked with Paul Loughnane, Alan McCarthy and Claire Scantlebury on the development of a diagnostic test for histoplasmosis in horses, and was able to clone and sequence marker genes from clinical samples received from The Gambia and Senegal. It was a unique opportunity for Alicia to combine her interest in equine sports, including ownership of her own horse at home near Bristol, with a period of training in molecular biology research skills. We all look forward to welcoming Alicia back to complete her degree studies in September 2017.
