Student Profiles

We asked our students their plans for graduation and the future, please see some of the responses below;

Tiffany Teng

What are you graduating in?
I will be graduating with a Bachelor of Law degree (LLB) as part of Class 2022.

How will you be celebrating your graduation day?
During the morning and afternoon, I will be mainly spending time at the graduation ceremony itself and in the award ceremony. Afterward, I will be going for a post-graduation celebratory meal with my parents who came to visit me from Malaysia.

How do you feel about being awarded a prize on your outstanding performance and contribution throughout your studies?
To be fair, I did not expect myself to receive any awards, so I was entirely elated when I received news that I was awarded Best Performing Direct Entry Student. The competition is exceedingly high as there are a lot of other outstanding direct entry students as well who deserve equal recognition. Having received this award is a testament to all the hard work that I have invested in throughout my studies. I had a few hiccups along my study journey. Having said this, this award is a reminder that failure and rejection are part of the learning curve and so long as we keep trying, one day there will be brighter days ahead.
I would also like to extend the award to all the dedicated lecturers and tutors in SLSJ. Without their profound guidance, this award would not be possible. I would also like to express my gratitude, most notably towards Professor Rob Stokes for his amazing classes and valuable opinions which contributed positively to my academic journey.

Can you share a highlight of your time at University or a quote about your time with us here?
One of the most memorable memories I had was volunteering in the law clinic after my exam ended. I was assisting Miss Judith Carter in an immigration and asylum case, where I helped draft a client statement. As the statement was finalized, the client came toward me and gave me a pat on the shoulder, while thanking me profusely. At that moment, I found joy and purpose in genuinely being able to assist litigants who are going through a rough patch in their life. Here, I would also like to thank Miss Judith Carter for her constructive feedback and for enhancing my transferable skills.

What are you next steps and plans for the future?
I will be continuing with my Bar Course studies in September. I look forward to be called to Bar and becoming a barrister in near future, assisting litigants and revamping the legal landscape.

Clara Hunt

What are you graduating in?
Law (First Class LLB Hons)

How will you be celebrating your graduation day?
I will be celebrating my graduation day with my family and catching up with my course friends over a glass of bubbly.

How do you feel about being awarded a prize on your outstanding performance and contribution throughout your studies?
I am thrilled and very proud to be awarded the Andrew T Sander Award for the Best Assessment Performance in Commercial Law. As Commercial Law was one of my favourite modules (taught by the best, Dr Rob Stokes) and is ultimately an area I wish to specialise in, this award feels very special. I am so pleased that my hard work and determination has paid off and I am honoured to be given this prize.

Can you share a highlight of your time at university or a quote about your time with us here?
My time at the University of Liverpool has been fantastic. I have made lifelong friends and the university has provided me with the best start to my legal career.

What are your next steps and plans for the future?
As an aspiring commercial solicitor, I hope to be successful at attaining a training contract and go onto study the Legal Practice Course at BPP University in September 2022.

Matthew Jones

What are you graduating in?
I am graduating in Law M100 (Undergraduate).

How will you be celebrating your graduation day?
My only form of celebration will be my graduation day itself. This is because the day itself is going to be incredibly important to me. Whilst it's going to be a lovely feeling walking across the stage to collect my degree certification, I am ultimately looking forward to speaking to my lecturers post-ceremony as they are the ones who have supported me throughout my University journey (in particular, my lecturers and seminar tutors in final year were very helpful, supportive and encouraging of me).

How do you feel about being awarded a prize on your outstanding performance and contribution throughout your studies?
To sum it up in one word, I would say I feel 'honoured'. My three years have been difficult in some areas, especially my second year which was all online due to pandemic restrictions. As a result, I have worked as hard as I can and devoted a significant amount of time to my legal studies, meaning that being awarded the George Stern award is a lovely recognition of all the work I put into my degree.

Can you share a highlight of your time at University?
The biggest highlight for me was living away in Halls of Residence in first year. I had never lived away before so this was a unique opportunity to experience life independently. I found that in first year, I really enjoyed my time in halls. Not only did I have really good flatmates, but I enjoyed the challenge of living independently and managing my own time. My experience of Halls of Residence in first year makes me excited to eventually move out from home and get a place of my own.

What are your next steps and plans for the future?
My next step is to complete my Post Graduate Certificate in Education at the University of Cumbria, which will begin this September. This lends itself to my plan for the future, which is to be a secondary school/sixth form teacher. As my degree subject (law) is not widely taught at A Level, I would be teaching other subjects, such as Psychology and Criminology in addition to law.

Can you share a highlight of your time at University?
During university I have loved meeting so many different people - staff and students included. The highlight of my time here has been spending time with my house mates who I get along really well with.

What are your next steps and plans for the future?
I am currently working throughout the summer to save money. After summer I am travelling Canada for a year on a working holiday visa. When I get back to the UK I hope to pursue a career in law - my current interests are immigration and medical law, but I am keeping an open mind.
