At the same, armed conflict often provides the setting for the most egregious human rights abuses, and prioritising investment protection may exacerbate the plight of the civilian population. While investment treaties empower investors to seek financial reparations for conflict-related losses from a host state, the practice and scholarship following ‘Arab Spring’ revolutions and ongoing armed conflicts in the Middle East and Afghanistan, have revealed that there is lack of clarity as to how effective investment treaty protections actually are in volatile times, how they relate to other applicable legal frameworks, and how they affect the state security interests as well as parallel protection of economic, social and cultural rights in the host state. This virtual symposium will provide an opportunity to discuss two recent books on these issues. Speakers: Dr Jure Zrilic, Dr Daria Davitti, and Dr Ira Ryk-Lakhman.
