A delegation from the School of Law and Social Justice have just returned from a successful trip to Shanghai Jiao Tong University in China for the second workshop of a collaborative research project on ‘Integrating Maritime and Climate Law for UN Sustainable Development Goals’ supported by a grant from the Global Partnerships Fund, University of Liverpool-Shanghai Jiao Tong University.
The workshop saw presentations on law of the sea, regional human rights protections and litigation and Chinese domestic law and governance in relation to addressing climate change. Further fruitful discussions were had regarding the intersections between these areas of law and the identification of common themes and strategies that could be developed moving forwards. Participants identified further areas for collaboration such as, the human rights impacts of sea level rise and maritime baselines, the cross-fertilisation of international legal regimes (tensions and benefits) and the role of public participation in developing law and policy to tackle the effects of climate change. A commitment was made to continue their cooperation with a view to developing joint publications and possible funded projects.
