Study Abroad Stories

Law with Year Abroad student Leah travelled to Southeast Asia to spend a year of her studies at the National University of Singapore (NUS).

What made you decide to study at NUS?

I chose NUS as I wanted to go to Asia but was worried about language barriers, English is Singapore’s national language so this was a huge positive. Although, I did choose to study Mandarin as a module so that I could try to learn a new language!

I also chose NUS as I wanted to be able to travel around Asia, Singapore is a great starting point for jumping around Asia, it’s so close to everywhere and flights are cheap.

What did you enjoy most about studying at NUS?

What I enjoyed the most was meeting lots of Singaporean and other international students, I made so many amazing friends from all over the world and had so many new experiences! I also loved that there was an infinity pool on campus that I could sunbathe by all day whilst everyone was freezing at home in the UK!

I also joined the University’s netball team so that I could continue playing sports whilst away.

What would you say to someone to encourage them to choose NUS as their Year Abroad option?

I can’t recommend NUS enough, I had the BEST year and wish I could go back!

Singapore is an amazing city with sights like Marina Bay Sands and Gardens by the Bay only 20 minutes away on the MRT. If you want to go somewhere with hot weather, delicious food, lots to explore, friendly people and a mixture of interesting cultures then Singapore is perfect!
