Studying Portuguese

Portuguese is the 7th most spoken language in the world, and has vital global importance thanks to Brazil's growing economy. Students of Portuguese will learn both the European and Brazilian variants of the language and will have the opportunity to explore the unique histories, societies and customs of the Portuguese-speaking world.

You can take Portuguese in the following ways through Open Languages:

  • Beginners 
  • Intermediate
  • Advanced 

Please note - Portuguese modules are only available as intensive modules, and the possibility of taking these modules on top of your degree will depend on your individual timetable availability. 

Before selecting your module and to make sure you choose the right route into this language for you, please review your existing language level against our criteria.

PORT012 Semester 1 Beginner - A1 3 - 4 hours per week. This module is timetabled with current degree programme students.  You have no knowledge of the language at all. 
PORT034   Semester 2   Intermediate (GCSE equivalent) - A2   3 - 4 hours per week. This module is timetabled with current degree programme students.  You have studied the language formally up to GCSE or equivalent - at least 90 hours.  
PORT056 Semester 1 Advanced (A-Level equivalent) - B1 3 - 4 hours per week. This module is timetabled with current degree programme students.  You have studied the language formally up to A-Level or equivalent - at least 150 hours. 
PORT078 Semester 2 Advanced - B2.2 3 - 4 hours per week. This module is timetabled with current degree programme students.  You have studied the language formally beyond A-Level - please seek advice from the module convenor.
