Teaching
German culture, literature and film
I teach the first year foundational modules which introduce the study of German politics, linguistics, literature and film. In the second year I run a module on the culture of the Weimar Republic, focusing on film and literature, and in final year a module on fairy tales and fantastic literature.
I also contribute German topics to departmental modules such as the Cinematic City module.
Translation
I convene and teach on the final year specialist translation module MODL311 and also supervise German translation projects for MODL312.
PhD supervision
Recent and current PhD projects I have supervised include: the representation of Berlin in contemporary English-language literature; the subtitling of swearing and other linguistic challenges from English into Chinese; and the translation of news about Saudi Arabia in UK newspapers.
I would particularly welcome enquiries for prospective graduate study in contemporary German literature; Berlin in literature (German-language, English-language, or comparative projects); Herta Müller; women's writing; translation studies, and especially for creative-critical projects in translation.
