Dialogue 4: Affect and Nostalgia in UK Public Imaginaries of Migration
Charlotte Taylor (University of Sussex) & Sofia Lampropoulou
8 June 2026 | 4 - 5:30pm | Wallbank Lecture Theatre, 8-14 Abercromby Square.
This dialogue brings together different perspectives on mobilising emotion talk in representations of migration in UK parliamentary debates and migrant advocacy. Drawing upon narrative analysis and corpus-assisted critical discourse analysis, we will interrogate the types of emotions mobilised to legitimise securitisation approaches to the discursive framing of mobility in parliamentary debates and the affective positions assigned to migrants and refugees in pro migrant storytelling by advocacy organisations. The dialogue will address and reflect on the extent to which we can reframe public imaginaries of migration.
