Teaching and Learning

Fungi

Fungi are interesting and important organisms, both in their own right and because of the ways that they can be used to study universal biological principles. My teaching introduces the biology of fungi, with emphasis on how their activities impact on people - within mycorrhiza that benefit plants, as causes of disease in plants and people, as major causes of crop losses and food spoilage, the effects of viruses on fungi, and fungi in biotechnology from brewing to specialist enzyme production.

Fungi also pose a fundamental biological question of how an organism can live as cytoplasm within a tube and my lectures also discuss our increasing understanding of this process.

Plants

Plants are interesting and important organisms, both in their own right and because of the ways that they can be used to study universal biological principles.

I lecture on plant development, using the formation of flowers as an example of how gene expression is controlled. I also provide a tutorial series to final year students of Genetics where we focus on secondary metabolites made by plants.
