Personal Statement
I am an early career researcher working in the lab of Professor Shirazi-Beechey with a focused interest in host-associated microbial communities, specifically those residing in the gastrointestinal tract. The intestinal microbiota plays an essential role in human health, and its disruption has been associated with many metabolic disorders and other diseases. My main research interest lies in understanding how dietary manipulations can alter the gut microbiota, and whether dietary manipulation could be a possible treatment strategy to restore a healthy gut microbiota. To date, my research has focused upon the use of next generation sequencing (NGS) technologies to investigate and understand the composition, diversity, activity and interactions of the gut microbiota in range of host species (pig, fish, human and cow) following various intervention trials.
