Aims

To present a practice-based portfolio that identifies opportunities for creating self-employment within the music industries with specific reference to industrial, marketing, legal, and budgetary objectives and constraints.


Learning Outcomes

(LO1) Understand the professional, commercial, legal, financial and promotional practices, frameworks and contexts in which musicians and music industry practitioners operate.

(LO2) Research, design and produce industry standard marketing and promotional materials to publicise their own musical projects.

Syllabus

 

Employment
A firming up of realistic self-employment opportunities in relation to the students' stated career ambitions

Marketing and Promotion
The development of strategies and materials that further the students' employment prospects

Contract and Copyright
A professional practitioner focused demonstration of the application and implementation of all relevant legal and income generating activities related to the students' portfolio career

Budgeting and accountancy
Demonstration of professional approaches to financial planning and management within a business context


Teaching and Learning Strategies

A blend of 12 weekly 2-hour lectures and 1-hour seminars with additional online content that support the development of the portfolio content that is agreed via learning contract between the student and tutor.

Across the 12 weeks there are 12.5 hour per week of learning hours. 3 hours per week are scheduled in class, with an additional 5 hours per week allocated to completing unscheduled self-directed seminar tasks that build toward portfolio completion. The remaining 4.5 hours of study a week are for further reading, practical engagement with the music industry and additional time to work on portfolio development and completion.

Attendance is recorded at the lecture and seminar.
