Aims

To develop accuracy and fluency in notation. To realise practical knowledge of instruments in relation to different orchestrational tasks. To refine and expand knowledge of 20th/21st-century styles, languages and approaches. To develop self-critical skills.


Learning Outcomes

(LO1) To use the Sibelius notation software at an advanced level.

(LO2) To orchestrate monophonic music for polyphonic resources.

(LO3) To demonstrate an advanced understanding of formal archetypes across a range of musical idioms.

(LO4) To demonstrate competency in notating when orchestration assignments.

(LO5) To demonstrate critical skills in analysing strategies for orchestration.

(LO6) To engage with aesthetic aspects of music composition.

(S1) Communication (oral, written and visual) - Presentation skills - written.

Syllabus

 

• Timbre, loudness and basic acoustics for orchestral instruments • Strategies for distributing materials amongst players • Partitioning an ensemble • In-depth analysis of orchestrational techniques in Stravinsky’s The Firebird • Techniques and strategies for notating orchestral scores • Animating orchestra textures  • Instruments as soloists, instruments as characters.
