Aims

• To analyse theories of the soundscape from sound studies scholars and practitioners of film sound design and music
• To understand how music composition, field recordings, foley, and other historical developments have influenced media soundscapes
• To compare the creation and function of soundscapes across different genres of media
• To produce a soundscape for a particular sequence of moving images, or to create an analytical soundwalk


Learning Outcomes

Syllabus

 

Topics covered in this module may include:
• Theories of the soundscape from sound studies / soundwalking / practitioners
• History of sound-focused music composition (e.g., musique concrete) and field recording
• History of sound design to generate environments in film and video games
• Techniques of sound design (e.g., foley; sound/music sample libraries) to create soundscapes
• Role of soundscapes in genre film versus interactive media
• The creation of soundwalks/soundscapes

Resources will be made available to students through Canvas, UoL’s Learning Management System. Students will be expected to source supplementary resources to develop their skills outside of contact hours. Students will be expected to produce written work outside of the scheduled teaching hours.


Teaching and Learning Strategies

Lectures will be delivered in teaching rooms.

Screenings/listening sessions will be delivered in screening spaces.

Note: this is a four-week long module and contact hours reflect this format. The majority of teaching will be delivered face to face on campus. Online delivery will be used to complement the on-campus delivery and where technology affords a better learning experience.
