Aims

To develop accuracy and fluency in notation. To realise practical knowledge of instruments in relation to different orchestrational tasks. To refine and expand knowledge of 20th/21st-century styles, languages and approaches to Develop Self Critical Skills.


Learning Outcomes

(LO1) Students will use the Sibelius notation software at an advanced level.

(LO2) Students will demonstrate an advanced understanding of formal archetypes across a range of musical idioms.

(LO3) Students will demonstrate competency when notating orchestration assignments.

(LO4) Students will demonstrate critical skills in analysing strategies for orchestration.

(LO5) Students will engage with aesthetic aspects of orchestration.

(S1) Time and project management - Project management.

(S2) Communication (oral, written and visual) - Following instructions/protocols/procedures.

(S3) Critical thinking and problem solving - Creative thinking.

• Writing for string instruments • Writing for wind instruments • Writing for brass instruments • Writing for mallet percussion and unpitched percussion • Orchestrational strategies of varying texture • Orchestrational strategies of varying character.
