Aims

To enable students to develop group rehearsal skills, and to work with other musicians effectively within an ensemble setting.

To enable students to develop group performance skills.

To enable students to improve their individual instrumental or vocal technique, focusing on the ability to perform with confidence and fluency.

To help students to gain a greater awareness of the issues that support the performance of popular music.


Learning Outcomes

(LO1) Students have the opportunity to gain a greater awareness of the issues that support the performance of popular music.

(LO2) Students will develop their communication and performance skills through the live performance of popular music.

(LO3) Students will develop their teamwork skills in their groups, to formulate, organise, prepare and deliver a short performance.

(LO4) Students will improve their individual instrumental and/or vocal skills.

(S1) Improving own learning/performance - Reflective practice.

(S2) Improving own learning/performance - Self-awareness/self-analysis.

Syllabus

 

A series of platform sessions, workshops and tutorials will take place, which, through the use of student-led learning activities, will explore such topics as: group dynamics, ensemble skills, arrangement, stagecraft, exploring different textures,improvisation and accompaniment through the development of a coherent musical performance set.

In addition, students receive individual instrumental tuition  (6 Hours) tailored to their particular needs, building on existing technical, expressive and creative skills. Students will also reflect on their work during the semester producing a short piece of writing documenting their progress.


Teaching and Learning Strategies

Teaching Method 1 - Seminar
Description: Seminars in which students share their group work with the entire module group, encouraging discussion of issues of performance highlighted by these sharings.
Teaching Method 2 - Practical
Description: Ensemble rehearsals
Teaching Method 3 - Tutorial
Description: Individual instrumental tuition

The majority of teaching will be delivered face-to-face on campus. Online delivery will be used to complement the on-campus delivery and where technology affords a better learning experience.
