Aims

Introduce students to music industry management practices within a real-world record company environment

Encourage creativity and entrepreneurship in students' own creative practice.

Encourage team-work, problem-solving and resilience skills.

Develop ‘real-world’ music industries employability skills.


Learning Outcomes

Syllabus

 

Topics will include: small business management, human resources management, music management, distribution, marketing and retail and promotion, social media work.
Students will be expected to apply these issues and approaches to their work on the label, working independently and as part of a team.
The course will also include guest talks from practitioners within the field.

Teaching Method 1 - Lecture
Description: Lectures introduce core concepts and material. Over 12 weeks.

Description: Seminars will be based around key themes intended to facilitate studio and practical work. Over 6 weeks.

Teaching Method 3 – Label work/Tutorial
Description: Label management work will be undertaken by students to prepare an album for release at the end of semester 2. Over 6 weeks.

Notes: Authentic assessment will be used throughout this module. Students will have an opportunity to complete practical work through the album release assessment and then have an opportunity to refl ect on their professional practice through the second assessment.

Description of how self-directed learning hours may be used: Students can prepare readings for lectures, coursework for seminars or spend time familiarising/refreshing their skills in the studios and/or with project preparations.

The majority of teaching will be delivered face to face on campus. Online delivery will be used to complement the on campus delivery and where technology affords a better learning experience.
