Aims

- To gain greater awareness of formal considerations to provide experience in handling small-scale musical form.
- To develop self-critical skills
- To develop accuracy and fluency in notation and musicianship
- To introduce students to the origins and historical development of counterpoint
- To gain basic awareness of a range of musical styles, languages, and approaches

Syllabus

 

- Contrapuntal techniques from Renaissance to contemporary periods
- Composing functional harmony and application of counterpoint to harmonic contexts


Teaching and Learning Strategies

Teaching Method 1 - Lecture
Description: Lectures introduce key concepts and techniques and will include short creative exercises that build toward the assessments.

The majority of teaching will be delivered face-to-face on campus. Online delivery will be used to complement the on-campus delivery and where technology affords a better learning experience.
