Aims

·         To give students experience of working effectively in small groups.

·         To train students to write about mathematics.

·         To give students practice in delivering presentations.

·         To develop students’ ability to study independently.

·         To prepare students for later individual project work.

·         To enhance students’ appreciation of the connections between different areas of mathematics.

·         To encourage students to discuss mathematics with each other.

Learning Outcomes

Work effectively in groups, and delegate common tasks.

Write substantial mathematical documents in an accessible form.

Give coherent verbal presentations of more advanced mathematical topics.

Appreciate how mathematical techniques can be applied in a variety of different contexts

Syllabus

Students are arranged in groups, each of which is based on a second year module that the students have taken in semester one. The first part of the module is spent reviewing and extending the material of the associated module. Students then work individually on individual topics arising from this material.

Each group writes a single project, consisting of an introductory section (for which the group as a whole is responsible), followed by sections treating each of the individual topics. The project is expected to be written with a uniform style, and the different sections should refer to each other where appropriate.

Each group also gives two joint presentations, one after the first (review) part of the module, and the other at the end of the module.

Coursework    Second semester  15    University policy.  Assessment 2 Notes (applying to all assessments) Written project report: 1. Assessment marks are calculated as follows: 40 per cent of the individual mark comes from the student's input into team work (two oral presentations delivered by the team and overall aspects of the written project) and 60 per cent of the mark comes from the student's section of the final written project. ------------------------------------------- 2. Resit strategy: Since the module outcomes involve group work in an essential way, there is no opportunity for an individual resit. If all members of a group fail, additional work will be set work over the summer on the written part of the project and a re-presentation (as a group) required in the normal re-sit period. Individuals who were part of a successful group will be required to retake the module as part of a new group the following year. ------------------------------------------- 3. This work is not marked anonymously. Oral presentation Anonymous marking impossible
