Aims

To provide students with skills in reading, writing, listening and speaking German to an advanced level;

To provide information about Germany and their year abroad;

To develop students' reading skills;

To develop students' presentation skills, to develop students’ independent learning skills.

Teaching and Learning Strategies

The majority of teaching will be delivered face-to-face on campus.

Seminar:
This module consists of one hour per week general language teaching in the target language, one hour oral practice and translation per week and one hour "Landeskunde Deutschland" including preparation for the year abroad and practicing reading skills through an independent project that will be presented and discussed in a 15 minute one-to-one session at the end of the semester.

This module is mapped against B2 level in German according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).

Syllabus

Two hours' general language lessons per week based on the following books: Sicher aktuell B2.2, Hueber publishing and Durrell, M., Kohl, K., Kaiser, C. and G. Loftus, Essential German Grammar, ISBN 9781138785816.

One hour Landeskunde per week, focussing on aspects of Germany and year abroad preparation. One hour speaking, interpreting and translating per week.

This German language module is designed for students on the ab initio intensive course pathway, who have successfully completed GRMN256 and plan to go abroad. In four weekly taught hours, it aims to enhance further skills acquired in semester one through both lessons and independent project work.
