The majority of teaching will be delivered face-to-face on campus. Online delivery will be used to complement the on-campus delivery and where technology affords a better learning experience.

The module consists of (1) five, 1-hour lectures, (2) 8 2-hour seminars; (3) one, 2-hour tutorial; and (4) two, 2-hour workshops.

Lecture
Key research methods, approaches and skills in practical translation will be delivered through plenary lectures for all students on the module (shared also with CHIN512 and MODL532).

Seminar
Language-specific seminars (for Arabic, French, German, Italian and Spanish) will cover a range of practical translation tasks which students are expected to prepare in advance and be ready to discuss in class.

Workshop
Two 2-hour workshops will focus on professional skills and industry understanding; and processes such as post-editing and transcreation.

The five lectures provide an introduction to the main linguistic and cultural challenges that translators will encounter while translating in a variety of general disciplines and text genres. In the seminars, students will conduct practical translation between L1 and L2 and discuss various translation strategies and considerations. Formative and peer-feedback will be provided throughout. In the two 2-hour workshops, students will gain hands-on skills and more in-depth knowledge of the translation profession, market and industry. A final tutorial on writing a translation commentary will prepare students for the summative assessment.
