Aims |
|
This module aims to develop students' understanding of art, architecture and literature as subjects of study in their own right, with associated disciplinary methodologies and as sources, in order to enable an interdisciplinary approach to the period. |
Learning Outcomes |

(LO1) A systematic knowledge, understanding and critical awareness of key themes and approaches in the study of medieval and early modern history and culture. |

(LO2) An ability to engage with current theoretical debates appropriate to MA level in an informed, analytical and critical manner. |

(LO3) An ability to interpret and evaluate a diverse range of primary source material critically and emphatically, while addressing questions of content, genre, authorship, and audience. |

Syllabus |
|
Key topics covered will include: Places and spaces in the middle ages and renaissance, studied through monuments, artefacts and texts such as: Chester cathedral; Troilus and Criseyde; Sir Gawain and the Green Knight; Castilian frontier ballads; Late medieval and renaissance artworks in the Walker Art Gallery. Library resources will be available via the reading list; key articles and other resources will be available on Canvas; field trips will be provided to local sites as appropriate. Students are expected to have read key texts (identified as core reading in the module handbook) before the associated seminar and to identify their own supplementary reading for their chosen essay topic. |
Teaching and Learning Strategies |

Seminar: The majority of teaching will be delivered face-to-face on campus. Online delivery will be used to complement the on-campus delivery and where technology affords a better learning experience. |
