Aims

To combine linguistic and literary approaches to the study of literary texts.
To introduce students to linguistic methods for the analysis of literary texts.
To contest the effectiveness of different analytical approaches.
To combine theories and literary texts of your own choosing in an imaginative and original way.

Topics covered typically include:
- Foregrounding and stylistic analysis
- Focalisation and point of view in narrative texts
- Politeness and dramatic dialogue
- Metaphor and other figures of speech
- The logical status of literary texts
- Speech, writing and thought presentation
- Implicature and inference in literary texts


Teaching and Learning Strategies

Teaching Method 1 - Lecture
Description: Lectures will introduce theories, explain difficulties and demonstrate analytical techniques. You will be given detailed suggestions and advice on how the theories might be approached in the coursework assignment.

Teaching Method 2 - Seminar
Description: Seminar discussions will centre around an exercise sheet which will (1) help you to practice the analytical techniques introduced during the lectures (2) provide you with a sense of the kinds of texts that you might discuss in your coursework and (3) draw your attention to some of the more complex and challenging aspects of different theories. You will also be encouraged to debate the advantages of as well as problematic issues surrounding different theories. In weeks 6 and 11, you will have an individual meeting with your tutor to discuss the coursework assignment.
