Aims |
|
The module will familiarize you with the development of a major writer and his closely-associated contemporaries, and of their contribution to early eighteenth-century culture. The module will develop your detailed knowledge and advanced understanding of ‘Scriblerian’ writings and their context. The module will develop your abilities to analyse literary texts, especially those involving satire, parody and irony. |

Syllabus |

Syllabus will include works such as: Swift: A Tale of a Tub , The Battle of the Books, Gulliver’s Travels , Verses on the Death of Dr Swift, Cadenus and Vanessa Gay: Trivia , The Beggar’s Opera , Fables The Memoirs of Martinus Scriblerus Pope, The Dunciad in Four Books Particular attention is paid to how the writing of Swift and the Scriblerians reflects and imagines issues of: authorship and the culture of print; politics; religion; urban expansion; the body, mind and spirit; sexual, racial and cultural identity; science, technology and new forms of knowledge. |
