To give students the opportunity to carry out independent study at an advanced level, with appropriate support, into a topic of interest to them. To build on students' existing research skills and their knowledge base from other modules.

1. Your topic should be selected so as to extend the knowledge and skills acquired in taught modules, but without duplicating material covered in those modules. 2. You cannot take the dissertation in English (in any mode) AND the SOTA300 Volunteering and Work Experience module. If you have taken the SOTA module at level 2 or 3, you cannot opt for a dissertation at level 3. 3.  Normallystudents are expected to submit an enhanced proposal or outline of theirproject to their supervisors by the end of week 4, having had at least onemeeting prior to this. For language students whose project requires ethicalapproval, this submission should take the form of a completed ResearchProtocol. This protocol/outline should be submitted with the finalDissertation, in both the electronic and hardcopy submissions.

Notes: There are two lectures on this module - 1) a lecture that gives guidance on dissertation-writing in general terms (structure, scope, time planning etc), and 2) a lecture by the School of Arts liaison librarian that gives guidance on specific resources within the Library useful for researching your dissertation.

Notes: One-to-one supervision on an English dissertation consists of 3 hours allocated contact time. However, the precise division of these hours should be determined by you and your supervisor in consultation. You might both want purely face-to-face meetings, or you might want some of the time to be taken in looking at draft work, or you may mutually decide contact will be primarily by e-mail. Part of the skill of a dissertation is in forming a relationship with your supervisor which respects the time commitme nts and working methods of both of you.
