Aims |
|
|
To examine the relationship between gender and media in terms of media production, texts, and audiences. To explore and analyse media representations of gender and its interconnection with other social identities. To assess and examine how audiences engage with media texts as women, and as feminists. |

Learning Outcomes |
|
|
(LO1) Students will be able to define and critically evaluate key feminist theories and concepts that explain the relationship between gender and media texts and institutions. |
|
|
(LO2) Students will be able to identify and analyse the representation of gender identities in a variety of media texts in relation to feminist ideas. |
|
|
(LO3) Students will be able to identify and discuss how unequal or gendered media production environments and textual representations impact on women as audiences. |
|
|
(S1) Communication (written, oral) Students will develop their written and oral communication skills and their ability to contribute to class discussions. |
|
|
(S2) Students will also develop their information literacy in finding, interpreting, evaluating, managing and sharing examples and information and academic literature. |

(S3) Students will also further develop their critical thinking and problem-solving abilities. |

Syllabus |

Topics covered during the module may include: key concepts in gender and media, feminist approaches to media studies and digital cultures, online feminist activism and citizenship, anti-feminist backlash, Black feminism and Intersectionality, media organisations as gendered institutions, feminist media audiences and participatory cultures. |
