Session 2018-19 Level 6 FHEQ Second Semester 7.5

Pre-requisites before taking this module (or general academic requirements):

CHEM241 Completion of BSc in Chemistry (or equivalent) with some polymer content

Aims

The aims of the module are to:

•        To demonstrate the relationship between structure and properties of organic materials

•        To provide students with an understanding of some of the advanced characterisation techniques used for organic materials.

To outline how computation can be used to guide synthesis of functional organic materials.

•        To examine some examples of cutting-edge research organic materials research underway at the Department of Chemistry

Learning Outcomes

Students will obtain an understanding of how functional organic materials are synthesised and structure/property relationships.

Students will understand how to select appropriate characterisation techniques for organic materials.

Students will be able to explain how computation can be used to accelerate the development of functional organic materials.

Students will be able outline how to design materials for specific applications.

Teaching and Learning Strategies

Lecture - 16 lectures covering the core content of the module

Syllabus

The syllabus consists of:

    • Designing functionality into organic materials
    • High performance/speciality polymers
    • Responsive materials
    • Porous materials
    • Characterisation of organic materials

This content will build upon material covered by the students in CHEM241 (Functional organic materials).

In addition to the lectures, students will be required to undertake independent reading of the resources specified on reading list. These resources will primarily be journal review articles and leading publications (which will be made available on VITAL)
