Pre-requisites before taking this module (or general academic requirements): |
Aims |
• To introduce students to further molecular modelling techniques, so that they can apply molecular modelling software in studies of a variety of chemical systems. |
Learning Outcomes |
(LO1) By the end of this module, successful students will: |
(LO2) By the end of the chemical database section of the module, a successful student will have gained: |
(LO3) By the end of the employability section of the module, a successful student will have gained: |
(S1) Students will develop their chemistry-related cognitive abilities and skills, ie abilities and skills relating to intellectual tasks, including problem-solving as required by the Chemistry subject benchmark statement. In particular, they will gain the ability to adapt and apply methodology to the solution of unfamiliar problems. |

(S5) IT skills |
Teaching and Learning Strategies |
Molecular modelling, database skills, and employability are taught in lectures (3 x 1h modelling, 2 x 1h databases, 1x1h employability), workshops (2 x 1h PCTC modelling, 1 x 3h PCTC databases) and associated assignments. Molecular modelling assignments are started under supervision and finished in the students’ own time; they are returned to the students with personal and group feedback. The database exercise will be completed under supervision. The chemical database assignment and employability tasks will be completed in the students’ own time. Chemical databases exercise and assignment will receive personal feedback. The modelling and database assignments require appropriate referencing, giving the students practice in referencing as required in their dissertation in other modules. The molecular modelling assignments contain materials that cover organic, inorganic, physical chemistry and surface science, thus linking the modelling component with the each student 019;s work within a research group in the department. Career Planning, Skills Review and Skills Profile are activities designed for students to review their skills to enable them to refine their CVs and cover letters. |
Syllabus |
Students will be introduced to more of the skills necessary to perform basic molecular modelling calculations: Students' chemical database skills will be further developed: Students’ employability skills will be further developed: |
