Aims

This module aims to provide a solid base of academic and professional skills required for success at university and in the graduate career market.


Learning Outcomes

Students will be able to develop skills in sourcing and referencing data

Students will be able to understand how to use an appropriate approach to analysing the data, interpreting the findings and developing an argument

Students will be able to understand how to write for an audience

Students will be able to understand their personal academic goals and how these fit with a professional future.

Students will be able to manage time effectively in a stressful environment


Teaching and Learning Strategies

Lecture - Key themes will be presented in lectures

At the end of each class every student will hand in a document detailing a key piece of learning for the session. This will be a part of their mark for the module and evidence of attendance.

Syllabus

Content will include areas such as:

  1. Transition to Higher Education (reflection on skills, development of independent learning, expectations of HE);
  2. Developing academic scholarship (reading, taking notes, searching databases, reading academic articles, essay writing, referencing)
  3. Team work
  4. Presenting professionally
  5. Professional behaviour (business communications and etiquette)
  6. Report writing (communicating ideas concisely, using evidence, writing an Executive Summary)
  7. Using Excel or other technical software
  8. Using quantitative data
  9. Reflective practice
  10. Networking and graduate insights – programme-specific
