Aims

This module aims to:

Critically analyse the strategic decisions and activities that underpin the management and commercialisation of innovation across diverse international contexts;

Identify, evaluate, and compare various forms of intellectual property and appropriability regimes;

Examine mechanisms of technology transfer and IP strategies, and their impact on innovation commercialisation, while addressing challenges in IP transactions and open innovation;

Prepare students to assess the influence of institutional environments and innovation ecosystems on commercialisation strategies and outcomes;

Explore ethical and societal challenges surrounding IP and commercialisation, enabling critical thinking on issues such as equitable access and the broader societal impact of the commercialisation of innovation;

Develop students' ability to apply interdisciplinary concepts, frameworks, and analytical tools to real-world scenarios through case-based analysis and industry engagement;

Build students' critical discussion, analytical, and presentation skills, enabling them to interact effectively with professionals and articulate strategic perspectives on global innovation and commercialisation.


Learning Outcomes

(LO1) Students will be able to critically evaluate the strategic significance of various forms of intellectual property (IP) and their role in the development and commercialisation of innovation.

(LO2) Students will be able to analyse and compare appropriability regimes and technology transfer mechanisms, assessing their impact on global innovation strategies.

(LO3) Students will be able to assess the influence of institutional environments and innovation ecosystems on the commercialisation process and strategic decision-making.

(LO4) Students will be able to demonstrate the ability to develop and effectively communicate comprehensive commercialisation strategies that address challenges in IP transactions and portfolio management.

(LO5) Students will be able to critically reflect on the ethical and societal implications of IP and commercialisation, considering issues such as equitable access and the broader impact on society.

(S1) Ethical awareness
Ethical awareness will be developed through the module content, seminar activities and group discussions on IP ethics and societal implications of IP and commercialisation. It will be assessed through group assignment.

(S2) International awareness
International awareness will be developed through the module content, seminar activities, and assignments. It will be assessed through group presentation and group assignment.

(S3) Teamwork
Teamworking skills will be developed by working in groups during the seminars and in both assignments. It will be assessed through group presentation and group assignment.

(S4) Verbal and written communication
Communication skills will be developed by having to discuss/present their rational and critical argumentation both in class and in the assignments. It will be assessed through group presentation and group assignment.

(S5) Problem solving
Problem solving skills will be developed through the module content, seminar activities and group discussions and in both assignments. It will be assessed through group presentation and group assignment.


Teaching and Learning Strategies

Lectures:

Synchronous x 8 hours (2 hours x 4)
Asynchronous x 6 hours (1 hour x 6)

Seminars x 12 hours (2 hours x 6)

Self-directed learning x 174 hours

Students will reflect on contemporary issues within entrepreneurship and innovation management and prepare for lectures and seminars with asynchronous material.

The module will cover the following topics/subjects:

Introduction to International Innovation protection and Intellectual Property (IP);

Types and Strategic Importance of IP Assets;

Appropriability Regimes and Open Innovation;

Mechanisms of Technology Transfer and Licensing;

Challenges in IP Transactions, Enforcement and Portfolio Management;

Global Institutional Contexts and Innovation Ecosystems;

Comparative IP Strategies in Established vs. Emerging Markets;

Developing and Communicating an Innovation Commercialisation Strategy;

Ethics and Societal Implications of IP and Commercialisation.
