Aims

This module aims to provide students with the opportunity to develop their understanding and critical awareness of issues associated with managing a workforce characterised by diversity in gender, age, ethnicity, disability, religion and sexual orientation etc. It will enable students to become familiar with: the drivers of increased workforce diversity; the theories underlying discrimination in organisations; current equality legislation; barriers to equality of opportunity in the workplace for minority groups; and organisational policies and practices for managing diversity and inclusion in the workplace. Students will also have to opportunity to reflect on how their own diversity might influence their interactions with other individuals at work.


Learning Outcomes

(LO1) Students will be able to demonstrate knowledge/understanding of the terms “equality”, “diversity” and “inclusion” in an organisational and international context.

(LO2) Students will be able to demonstrate knowledge/understanding of the social justice case and the business benefits case for managing EDI in the workplace.

(LO3) Students will be able to demonstrate knowledge/understanding of the legal framework for EDI in organisations.

(LO4) Students will be able to demonstrate knowledge/understanding of the issues related to gender, age, ethnicity, disability, religion and belief, and sexual orientation in the workplace.

(LO5) Students will be able to demonstrate knowledge/understanding of the organisational strategies used to develop the effective management of EDI

Teaching and Learning Strategies

Teaching Method - Lecture
Description: Lectures will be used to provide an overview of various themes and topics areas; to consider different approaches, theories, concepts in equality, diversity and Inclusion; and to place the module readings in context.

Teaching Method - Seminars
Description: Seminars will be used to allow for discussions of lecture content, themes, concepts and assessment as well as interaction with other students. Case examples will be used to consider the application of theory to practice. The group work element of the tutorials will provide a context for students to reflect on their own diversity and their team’s diversity.

Description: In addition to the directed student learning, students will be expected to engage in independent learning. The main topics covered by this module will include:
Origins of diversity and equal opportunity in the workplace
The UK and International diversity context
Social Justice case of EDI and the business benefits case
Legal frameworks for equality
Managing gender, age, ethnicity, disability, religion and belief, and sexual orientation in the workplace
Organisational approaches to EDI

Students who have taken Organisational and Management (ULMS151) in year one will find that this module develops the topics of management and leadership. For students who take Introduction to People Management (ULMS206) in year two, this module will complement the content related to the theoretical perspectives, roles and practical activities associated with people management.

Library resources will be accessible through the module reading list contained in the module handbook. Other key learning resources will accessible through the VLE.

Students will be expec ted to read all resources within the reading list and to read beyond the reading list to find their own supplementary resources.

Students will be expected to complete independent reading in preparation of their assessments and to support their learning in lectures and tutorials.
