Aims |

The aim of this module is to enable a student to undertake an independent piece of empirical work that demonstrates a consolidated level of thorough understanding achieved by undertaking theoretical as well as empirical analysis on a particular aspect of interest in accounting and finance. |

Teaching and Learning Strategies |
|
A variety of research methods have been introduced to students across other modules in their programme. Students should apply these methods in their independent research project. Lectures and workshops will be provided to demonstrate essential research skills of econometrics, mathematics and IT with practical examples. Students are encouraged to use drop-in sessions for individual feedback and further skill development. Students are also expected to use bibliographic skills to review academic literature in order to acquire most up to date research methods. 4 hour lecture x 4 weeks |
Syllabus |

The dissertation topic shall be selected in collaboration with the dissertation supervisor. 32 hours of Supporting lectures will be provided to students covering following topics: Research project planning and time management; Identifying and formulating research questions; Literature review; Hypothesis and methodology; Data collection, storage and cleaning; Introduction to WRDS; Research tools (Excel, Stata, Eviews and MATLAB); Research examples (regression, time series, panel data, event study and other methods); Evaluation of research contribution, impact and limitations; Academic writing and presentation; Referencing and bibliographies. |
