Aims

To develop students’ understanding of the financial issues facing football clubs and leagues;

To develop students’ understanding of current financial regulations in the football industries;

To develop students’ understanding of the importance of sound financial management to the successful implementation of strategy.

Syllabus

 

Reading and analysing football club accounts;

Cash flows in football: income and expenditure, profit and loss;

Ownership structures, investment and debt;

Valuing clubs;

Financial distress, administration and recovery;

Licensing, regulation and financial fair play;

Governing bodies and competitions: financial implications of strategic decisions;

Finance and strategy in football clubs: developed markets (based around an HBS case);

Finance and strategy in football clubs: emerging markets (similarly based around a case).
