Aims

The module covers a range of topics including international logistics, freight logistics, container logistics, shipping logistics, port management, shipping emissions and sustainability. The main aims are to:

Provide a study of the key principles and techniques applicable in the management of maritime logistics mainly from the quantitative/analytical perspective;

Understand the principles and roles of maritime logistics;

Understand and apply a range of quantitative/analytical tools and techniques to improve maritime logistics.

Learning Outcomes

(LO1) Be able to critically appraise the principles, tools, and techniques of maritime logistics management;

(LO2) Be able to critically analyse and evaluate the quantitative performance of maritime logistics systems;

(LO3) Be able to apply quantitative tools and techniques to solve optimisation problems and improve maritime logistics performance;

(S1) Problem solving skills
Students will develop their problem-solving skills through analysis of case studies and logistics in practices provided in lectures/seminars, and solving the problems in assignments.

(S2) Numeracy
Students will develop numeracy skills by understanding quantitative analytical and optimisation methods, and their applications in exercises and assignments.

(S3) Commercial awareness
Students will develop an understanding of commercial applications of optimisation techniques and tools in maritime logistics context.

(S4) Teamwork
Students will develop their teamworking skills through group discussion to analyse case studies in lectures/seminars.

(S5) Organisation skills
Students will develop time management skills by meeting deadlines of exercises tasks and assignments.

(S6) Communication skills
Students will develop communication skills by engaging with case studies, report writing and working in groups.

(S7) IT skills
Students will develop IT skills and apply optimisation tools during lab sessions and assignments.

Syllabus

International logistics and global maritime logistics:
Concept of international logistics; different channels in international logistics; challenges in international logistics; logistics processes in case studies; concept of maritime logistics; relationship between international trade and international logistics.

Freight logistics:
Concepts of freight logistics; general routing and scheduling techniques such as the shortest path method; concept of inter-modal, multi-modal, synchro-modal; quantitative optimisation tools such as Excel Solver.

Container logistics:
Container logistics chain; container fleet management; causes for empty container repositioning; inland empty container repositioning; global empty container repositioning; various solutions to empty container repositioning from channel perspective; quantitative techniques for container management such as network flow models and inventory control systems; application of quantitative techniques.

S hipping logistics:
Shipping service types; Liner shipping and tramp shipping business models; planning problems in shipping logistics; shipping network design and solution techniques; ship deployment and scheduling and solution techniques; ship speed optimisation in relation to economic and emission performance; application of descriptive/prescriptive data analytics techniques with Excel for shipping big data (e.g. Automated Identification Systems data).

Port/terminal management:
Logistics processes at container terminals; integrated planning for terminal operations; integration of entire logistics processes in container terminals; quantitative techniques for port/terminal management; application of quantitative techniques.

Sustainability issues:
With the increasing concerns on climate change and global warming, transport industry is among the top three CO2 emitters among all economic sectors; what are the measures to reduce the emissions from shipping and ports ?
