Aims

This module aims to:

Develop students’ critical understanding of a range of theories and perspectives on effective leadership and group dynamics in organisations, and the relevance of these in different organisational contexts;

Encourage students to reflect on their own values, personality, interpersonal skills, management and leadership style and identify relevant areas for personal development based on their future goals and career aspirations;

Develop students’ understanding of the relationship between leadership and management approaches, ethics and the development of organisational culture.


Learning Outcomes

(LE1) A leader.
Students will be encouraged to develop their own leadership skills, to understand the various leadership approaches, and to relate these to their individual sector or organisational context.

(LE2) A lifelong learner.
Students will have opportunities to practice skills of self-reflection and to understand the importance of continually building skills and knowledge in order to continue their development as valuable and responsible business leaders, to be able to follow a flexible career path and continue to learn to make a difference throughout their working lives.

(LE3) A team player.
Learning activities will require students to work in groups and manage the interaction and relationships with other group members whilst assessments will encourage students to apply their knowledge of team-working theories and frameworks to reflect on these experiences.

(LO1) Students will be able to analyse the nature and impact of individual differences in personality, values, motivations and behaviours in group and organisational contexts.

(LO2) Students will be able to critically reflect on a range of theories and perspectives on effective leadership in organisations, and the relevance of these for their own sector of interest.

(LO3) Students will be able reflect on their own values, personality, interpersonal skills, management and leadership style and identify relevant areas for personal development based on their future goals and career aspirations.

(LO4) Students will be able to demonstrate an understanding of the relationship between leadership and management approaches, ethics and the development of organisational culture.

(LRE1) A problem solver.
Students will be encouraged to think critically about theory and their own practice and to challenge assumptions about leading and managing individuals and teams. They will do this by gathering and synthesising information, analysing alternative perspectives and options and reflecting on their own practice.

(LRE2) Organised and able to work under pressure.
This will be evident in the students’ independent management of their assignments and ability to meet deadlines.


Teaching and Learning Strategies

The module will primarily be delivered through a series of e-lectures, delivered through a variety of methods, covering key topics, theories and case examples. These will be supported by individual online task such as, case studies, blogs, collaborative tasks and discussion boards, which will be used to develop and apply learning. These activities will be moderated by the module instructor. Students will also be directed to key academic and practitioner readings to further develop their learning.

Unscheduled Directed Student Hours: 30 hours
Description: The asynchronous e-lecture and interactive class activity will equate to 5 hours per week over 6 weeks.
Attendance Recorded: Yes – tracked via the learning platform.

One scheduled synchronous seminar of one hour will be delivered in week 1, with the remaining two synchronous seminar hours scheduled during weeks 2 to 6. The dates and times of the seminars will be confirmed at the start of the module (if th ere are issues with time zones another session will be provided). Peer discussion and questions will be encouraged. These sessions will be recorded and moderated by the module instructor.

Scheduled Directed student hours: 3 hours
Description: The synchronous seminars will equate to 3 hours in total over 6 weeks.
Attendance Recorded: Yes – tracked via the learning platform.

Self-directed learning hours: 67 hours
Description: This will involve directed and independent reading, and independent research into management theories and practices relevant to the module syllabus, aims and learning outcomes.


Syllabus

 

Leadership theories including: different styles, perspectives and approaches to ethical and responsible leadership.

Managing in contemporary organisational contexts including: ability to manage in different contexts such as international and public and private sector, importance of organisational culture.

Leading and managing teams including: group formation and dynamics, motivation, giving and receiving feedback, conflict management.

Self-analysis and development planning including: understanding individual differences, personality, values, motivations, behaviours; critical self-analysis and reflection tools and techniques for personal development planning.
