Aims |

To provide an integrative understanding of the role and objectives of the purchasing function and its complex inter- and intra-organisational relationships that contribute to sustained commercial success and maximisation of competitive advantage; To explore issues relating to contracts, including tendering, bidding and order management processes, as well as the legal, commercial and socio-economic implications of purchasing strategies; To critically evaluate purchasing strategies, tools and constraints including sourcing, supplier development and supplier-client relationships. |

(S1) Communication Skills: Students will have opportunities to develop written communication skills through group discussions and assignments; |

(S2) Information and Communication Technology Skills: Students will have opportunities to improve their ICT skills. Students will demonstrate skills in the use of software applications including word processing, visual presentations, databases, spreadsheets and using the internet for information searches in the course; |

(S3) Personal Effectiveness: Students will be encouraged to think critically about theory and practice and to challenge and critique assumptions about the management of people and organisations. In doing so they will be able to recognise and consider issues such as ethical dilemmas, corporate social responsibility, organisational values, leadership approaches and styles; |

(S4) Time management. This involves planning scheduled work and meeting assessment deadlines. This will be evident in the students’ independent management of their assignments and coursework and by meeting coursework deadlines. |

Purchasing as Strategic Resource:- Analyze how purchasing contributes to competitive advantage; Evaluate personal experiences with purchasing as a source of competitive advantage. Sourcing Approaches:- Evaluate Kraljic’s Portfolio Purchasing Model; E-procurement for Contemporary Organisations:- Analyse the changes to purchasing resulting from the use of e-procurement; Analyse how e-procurement changes purchasing-supplier relationships; Analyse use of e-procurement in organizations; Analyse how the of use of an e-procurement system changes skill and knowledge requirements for personnel; Analyse how the use of an e-procu rement system changes the strategic contribution of purchasing; Evaluate personal strengths and weakness related to skills related to e-procurement; Analyse steps to improve skills related to e-procurement. Power and Trust in Buyer-Seller Relationships:- Analyse the impact of power in buyer-seller relationships on organisational decision making; Evaluate the impact of levels of trust on buyer seller relationships; Evaluate existing levels of trust in buyer seller relationships.
