Aims

To provide students with an understanding of the key theories relevant to the topic;

To develop as critical understanding of the practical challenges as they affect managers in public and not-for-profit organisations;

To develop students as independent learners capable of pursuing a research project.

Teaching and Learning Strategies

Teaching Method 1 - Seminar
Description: Four two-hour seminars discussing key readings (journal articles and case studies) identified in advance.

Teaching Method 2 - Tutorial
Description: One-to-one tutorial support for each student to discuss their chosen research topic, to offer guidance on readings and other advice. Tutorials will be arranged individually.

Syllabus

 

The contemporary policy context;

International context and perspectives;

The problem of organisation;

Governance models and accountability;

Financial, legal and management challenges;

The module will cover this ground through a combination of directed readings and seminar discussion. Readings will cover theory and fundamental concepts together with case study materials. Students will be expected to prepare for seminars by reading the material in advance. At the same time, they will be expected to develop their own individual desk based research topic on a theme to be approved. A wide range of further reading materials will be identified for students to pursue particular topics of interest. One-to-one tutorial support will also be given to direct each individual project.
